Brig Gen Benjamin Adesanya Maja Adekunle was born on 26 July 1937 in Kaduna, but hails from Ogbomosho Local Goverment Area of Oyo. He trained at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, United Kingdom and was granted commission into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corp on 15 December 1960.
During the Nigerian Civil War (1967 - 1970) he earned the reputation of a gallant officer, who rendered selfless service to the nation and in recognition of which he was awarded various medals including on Republican Medal, Defense Service Medal, General Service Medal, Forces Service Star and Passed Staff Course.
He was generally described as an intelligent, capable and efficient officer who was outspoken, exhibited good team spirit and was a disciplinarian. He was generally known to be more of a pragmatic rather than a theoretical officer whose professional ability was never in doubt as evidenced in his remarkable exploit during the Civil War.
He was popularly known with the slogan, "to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done".
Brig Gen Adekunle was a hero of the civil war. His contributions made the war to end in time. It was because his command opened the axis towards the coast that the war ended at the time it did. He coordinated the Armed Forces very well. May his soul rest in peace. Amen
