Rash is a noticeable change in the texture or colour of the skin.  The skin may become itchy, bumpy, chapped, scaly, or otherwise irritated.  Rashes are caused by wide range of conditions.  Rashes can occur at any age to anyone, and there are a variety of causes of skin rashes.  A rash breaks out when the skin becomes irritated, inflamed, and/or swollen. Depending on the cause, rashes can look quite different.  Some are raised, while others are scaly and flat. Some rashes itch, and other types of rashes burn.

Rash is not a specific diagnosis.  It is instead a general term that means an outbreak of skin inflammation and discoloration that change the skin looks and feels. Common rashes include eczema, poison ivy and heat rash. Infections that causes the rashes include fungal, bacterial parasitic and viral infection.

Self-diagnosis of a rash is not usually a good idea.  Rashes that quickly resolve are generally not dangerous.  Proper evaluation of a skin rash requires a visit to a doctor or other health-care professional.

There are many possible causes of skin rashes.

1. One of the common causes of skin rashes is a food allergy. When people develop rashes as a result of a food allergy they often develop hives, which makes the skin red, swollen and itchy. If you think a food allergy may be causing your rash, you should try eliminating the suspect food for 6 weeks to see if that helps

2. Medication Allergies can cause skin rashes, it is called drug eruptions, and they should be taken seriously.  If you develop a rash while you are taking a medication, you need to contact your doctor immediately.

3. There are many different types of infections that can give you a rash. One of the most common infections that result in a rash is chickenpox, which is a virus that causes itchy blisters all over the body.  Other infections, that skin infections caused by bacteria or yeast, can also result in a rash.  Rashes that are caused by an infection need to be treated by a doctor.

4. Heat rash is a surprisingly common rash that people can get anytime of the year, but especially during hot and humid weather.  The rash is caused by sweat blocking the pores, and it often form in skin fold. Treatment involves cooling the area down, keeping it dry and reducing friction.

5. Another common type of rash is the rashes that occurs in most infants who wear diapers when feces and urine are in contact with skin for too long.

Having a rash can be miserable, however, if you know what is causing it you can often get rid of the rash.  If you have a rash, make an appointment with your doctor so they can help determine the cause.
